Is “change” the future of learning?

Traditionally, a key function of learning in organisations was to create and present relevant and interesting content to enable the learner to learn.

But content is becoming ubiquitous. You can’t escape it.

People are beginning to use TED, Lynda, udemy, and many other online learning platforms to self manage their learning.

Is content creation from Learning & Development becoming redundant?

Deloitte University Press said it best in their 2016 Global Human Capital Trends report; “Corporate learning departments are changing from education providers to content curators and experience facilitators, developing innovative platforms that turn employee learning and development into a self-driven pursuit”.

The pressure on companies to improve their learning function continues to intensify, yet The Conference Board CEO Challenge 2016 found nearly every CEO to report that their organisations are not developing skills fast enough or leaders deeply enough.

“The transformation of learning is a powerful story, and most organizations are still in the first or second act of this multi-act drama.” – Deloitte University Press, 2016 Global Human Capital Trends

Similarly, Humanity in Business report statistics from McKinsey & Co., Harvard, IBM and Towers Watson who have all found that organisations are still unable to lead change successfully. They state that only 30% of change initiatives succeed – results that haven’t changed in the last 40 years!

Could it be that delivering “change” is going to become the primary function of L&D? Be it organisational change, or at an individual level – behavioural change.

I’m attending the Humanity in Business “Change Leadership Summit – Creating a Culture of Sustainable Change” on June 9th in Sydney. I’m excited about being part of the change conversation.
