The 6 Key Learning & Development Trends for 2019

It’s that time of year where we’re starting to look ahead to next year, so it was great to see that Training Industry have been compiling the 6 key learning & development trends coming our way in 2019.

I love to read about anything focusing on trends and this is a really quick and easy read.

Check out the 6 key trends in the Training Industry Trends 2019 Report.

As we’ve seen trending for a while now, Training Industry corroborate that flexibility, adaptability and embracing change will see organisations thrive. Learning professionals and teams need to be focusing on their own development, so that they are best placed to adapt to and embrace the changing, complex business environment.

One of the key trends that piqued my interest was “Blending Experiences as Opposed to Blended Learning”. This point talks about building optimal learning experiences for learners to apply their new skills to the job. I love that they talk about personalisation and coaching as part of this – interestingly though there is no mention of behavioural change or outcomes. A blended experience must be focused on creating change and an outcome, to guard against giving learners experiences for experiences sake.

I was also intrigued to read that there is a “Market Opportunity for Pre-Boarding”. This essentially means that there is an opportunity for a “train-to-hire” approach to recruitment, so that people are placed in a role after being fully trained. This rang a bell for me as we already do pre-boarding for our Turning Learning into Action™ team. We train them in the Turning Learning into Action™ methodology before we mutually decide if they’re a good fit for the team. I think there is real value in this, so you know if you’re getting the “right people on the bus” to quote the great Jim Collins.

“Training to Prevent Crisis” is another interesting trend to consider. The report recommends that organisations need to get proactive. Get ahead of any risks or scandals that could appear and avoid a Band-Aid approach to a crisis.
